For a home in Boynton Beach or elsewhere along the coast, the right impact window is about more than the glass. It is a complete, approved system installed for your opening, wall type, exposure, and local wind requirements. Getting those details right protects your home, helps reduce stress during storm season, and supports a clean permitting process.

Start With the Difference Between Impact and Wind Ratings

Homeowners often see a high Design Pressure rating and assume that means a window is impact rated. They are related, but they answer different questions.

A wind rating measures how well a window assembly can resist wind pressure. Strong winds push against the exterior of a window and can create suction on the opposite side of the home. The unit, frame, glass, locks, fasteners, and installation method must resist both forces without failing.

An impact rating addresses flying debris. In a qualifying impact test, the window is struck with a specified projectile and then subjected to repeated pressure cycles. The goal is not necessarily for the outer glass to remain unmarked. The goal is for the system to stay intact and keep an opening from forming in the building envelope.

Design Pressure Ratings Explained

Positive and Negative Pressure Both Matter

Positive pressure pushes a window inward. Negative pressure pulls it outward, much like suction. Florida storms can create both conditions as wind changes direction around the home.

A window must be rated for the applicable positive and negative pressures, not simply one favorable number. This is one reason professional measurements and engineering review are valuable. The opening, fastener schedule, substrate, and edge distance all affect how the approved window system performs once installed.

How Impact Window Testing Works

Florida-approved impact products commonly rely on recognized testing standards. You may see references to ASTM E1886 and ASTM E1996, which address impact resistance and cyclic wind pressure. Products approved for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone may also reference Miami-Dade testing protocols, often called TAS 201, TAS 202, and TAS 203.

The names of the tests are less important than what they demonstrate: the window has been tested as an assembly for impact and continued pressure loading. A laminated glass interlayer is a key part of many impact products. If the exterior pane cracks after impact, the interlayer can hold the glass together and help keep the opening protected.

Do not confuse tempered glass with impact glass. Tempered glass is safety glass that breaks into small pieces. Laminated impact glass uses multiple layers bonded with an interlayer to help retain the glass after breakage. Both may have a role in a home, but they are not interchangeable for hurricane protection.

Read the Labels Without Guesswork

A good window proposal should make it possible to verify what is being installed. Ask to see the manufacturer, exact series, glass configuration, dimensions, DP rating, and applicable Florida product approval. These details should align with the window selected for each opening.

There are several labels homeowners may encounter:

  • Florida Product Approval identifies a product system that has been reviewed for use under Florida building requirements. The approval includes limitations, installation details, and sometimes several approved configurations.

  • Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance is a product approval commonly associated with the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. It may be used outside that zone when appropriate, but it does not replace confirming local project requirements.

  • NFRC labels address energy performance, including U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, visible transmittance, and air leakage. These are energy and comfort measures, not proof of hurricane impact compliance.

  • AAMA or other performance certifications can provide useful information about air, water, and structural performance. Review them alongside the required approval documents rather than treating a certification mark as the final answer.

The paperwork matters because an approval is not a blank check. A product may be approved only up to certain sizes, with particular glass, mullions, reinforcement, or anchoring patterns. Changing one feature can change the approved application.

Energy Ratings Matter in South Florida, Too

Hurricane protection is usually the first concern, but energy performance affects how your home feels every day. In Palm Beach County, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, or SHGC, deserves close attention. It measures how much solar heat passes through the window. A lower SHGC generally means less solar heat entering the home, which can support indoor comfort and reduce cooling demand.

Visible transmittance tells you how much natural light comes through. Very low solar heat gain can be useful on harsh west-facing exposures, but homeowners should also consider whether the glass tint will make a room darker than they prefer. Why Size, Configuration, and Installation Change the Rating

Configuration also matters. A paired window with a mullion is not evaluated the same way as two independent windows. Adding a transom, changing the glass thickness, or selecting a different frame color or reinforcement may affect the available approval options.
