Ridge Vents

A ridge vent runs along the peak of a sloped roof. Because it sits at the highest point of the attic, it gives hot air a natural route to escape. When installed correctly and combined with adequate soffit intake, ridge ventilation is often one of the most effective and low-profile options for shingle roofs.

Ridge vents are especially appealing because they blend into the roofline and do not require electricity. They also provide continuous exhaust rather than concentrating airflow in a few small openings. The trade-off is that they only work as intended when the roof has a suitable ridge layout and enough intake ventilation below.

For tile roofs, ridge ventilation may be possible, but the installation must match the tile profile and roof system. Details at the ridge matter. A roofing contractor should protect against wind-driven rain while maintaining the ventilation opening needed for airflow.

Soffit Vents

Soffit vents are intake vents located beneath the roof’s overhang. They bring outside air into the attic at the lowest practical point, making them the partner to ridge vents and other high exhaust vents.

A common ventilation mistake is adding more exhaust vents without confirming that enough intake air can enter. Exhaust ventilation cannot move air effectively if the attic is starved for intake. Powered Attic Vents

Powered attic vents use an electric motor, and some models use solar power, to pull hot air from the attic. They can seem like the obvious answer when an attic feels excessively hot. In certain roof layouts, they may be useful, especially where natural ventilation is difficult to achieve.

However, powered vents are not automatically the best choice. If intake ventilation is inadequate, a fan can pull conditioned air from the living space through ceiling gaps and attic penetrations. That may increase the demand on your air conditioner rather than reduce it. Electrical components and motors also require consideration over time.

Before recommending a powered vent, a qualified roofer should inspect the soffits, insulation, attic floor, roof geometry, and existing exhaust locations. The goal is controlled airflow, not simply stronger airflow.

Gable Vents

Gable vents are installed in the exterior wall near the peak of a gable roof. They can provide ventilation where ridge venting is not practical and are often seen on older homes. They may also add architectural character when matched to the home’s exterior.

Their performance varies with wind direction and attic layout. Gable vents work best when air has a clear path across the attic, but they are generally less consistent than a balanced soffit-and-ridge system. What About Flat and Low-Slope Roofs?

Adding conventional roof vents to a low-slope roof without evaluating the entire assembly can create leaks or compromise the roof’s performance.
